How to implement lifestyle changes to help you lose weight
Changing your lifestyle in order to lose weight is not an easy thing to do. Changing your diet is very simple, but it is something completely different to change your lifestyle as changing the way you live your life is something that will help you keep the weight off permanently.
The first thing to do is ask yourself why you want to lose weight. Is it something you want or something that your partner wants? Are you prepared to undertake some major changes in your life to keep that weight off? Yes? Then let’s go!
The first thing to do is evaluate your kitchen and what you have in it. Look around you? Do you have a deep-fat fryer in the corner that you use regularly? Get rid of it. If you want to keep the weight off, then you need to ask yourself how you can lose weight if you use gadgets to cook food in unhealthy ways.
Look at what you have stashed in your kitchen drawers. Do you find that you have a lot of fast food flyers for pizzas, Chinese or Indian food? Ask yourself why you keep them? Do you ring them on the weekends when you and your friends have had a night out and had a few drinks or do you call because you don’t feel like cooking? If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, then you should get rid of them.
Look at yourself deep within and look for patterns in the way you eat. Do you find yourself eating more when you’re stressed or feeling really sad? This is called comfort eating; you will find the pounds piling on if you do not do something about this.
Comfort eating can start at any time in your life, but most will suffer from it during adolescence. Peer pressure, especially during your teens, will affect your self-esteem. Do get rid of that feeling, you may find turning to food will ease that pressure but it is an empty promise – the feelings return with a vengeance. If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and you suffer from comfort eating or an eating disorder, look at your life and find out where and why things went wrong.
There are councillors who can help you discover this and help you implement ways to combat it. However, keeping a journal or diary can help you identify the root of the problem. Over time you will find patterns and you will also see how you have changed since you started your aspirations.
Another way to change your lifestyle is look at what you do when you go out shopping. What are you buying at the supermarket? Instead of buying all that junk food, pick up fresh fruit and vegetables and substitute all those ready-made meals for low-fat options.
Another thing to do is change your leisure activities. Get off that couch and walk the dog with your family or your friends; substitute your car for a bicycle or your own two feet. Instead of sitting at the computer surfing the net, go hiking, swimming or more physical activities with your loved ones. This will help boost your energy levels and your self-esteem.
You will also need to be prepared for setbacks. Little setbacks will happen from time to time – you won’t want to hit the gym or you want to finish that tub of ice-cream. You might feel really hungry at times and want unhealthy snacks. This is normal. One suggestion is to carry some healthy snacks, like little packets of raisins, around in your bag.
Changing your lifestyle in order to lose weight is not an easy thing to do. You need to really look at yourself and ask what you want out of it. However, with even the simplest changes, you will find the weight coming off easily and permanently.
